Scully Da-Man

Filed under: Dodgers, Baseball, Sports — Javi @ 10:53 am
Vin ScullyThe legendary God among mortal sports broadcasters Vin Scully is set to sign an extension today. I wasn’t around to hear him during the days of Koufax, but thanks to the magic of the internet I have been able to hear Scully’s call of the 9th of Koufax’s perfect game and read it as well. To put it mildly, Dave Shenin of the Washington Post said:

To hear Scully call the ninth inning of Sandy Koufax’s Sept. 9, 1965, perfect game…is to make a baseball writer contemplate a career as a roofer. Off the top of his head, without the benefit of a delete button or an editor, Scully composed one of the most gorgeous pieces of baseball literature you will ever encounter.

The man is that good. I was able to witness Scully’s classic call of the Gibson Homerun in ‘88

High fly ball into right field. She is gone!

Then, unlike the moronic Bob Costas who must hear his own voice during every significant sporting event, Scully shut up and let everyone at home hear the crowd cheering and going crazy. After the enthusiasm of the stadium was transferred to those of us sitting in our living rooms, Scully uttered the best line I have ever heard during a live Sports Broadcast:

In a year that has been so improbable, the impossible has happened.

To this day, I get the chills whenever I hear this call (and am feeling some as I copy/paste the transcript from the LA Times article). It’s unreal the power that highlight holds over me as I am transplanted back to the living room floor of my house when I was a 13 year old boy.

Many people seem to prefer the Jack Buck call of “I don’t believe what I just saw,” but the Scully call is much more memorable to Dodger fans because it sums up that magical year.

If this really is Scully’s last contract with the Dodgers, thanks for all the memories so far and all Dodger fans look forward to memories of the next 3 years.

Are you kidding me?

Kobe In the same month, the Lakers have lost to the 2 worst teams in the NBA, the Bobcats back on the Feb. 3rd and last night to the Atlanta Hawks. It’s gotten to the point where there’s no one to blame anymore. We just have to accept that these Lakers are a bunch of pathetic excuses for basketball players and that losses are to be excpected and wins to be cherished like the rare occurences they have recently become.

Bring on Spring Training!!!!

Peace Out.

Stanford down, nearly out

Filed under: Stanford, Basketball, Sports — Javi @ 10:50 am
Entering this past week, Stanford had 2 road games and with one win could edge ever so close to an NCAA berth. Sadly, this year’s team just doesn’t seem to have any mojo for pulling out games when Chris Hernandez isn’t pulling out miracles. The Cardinal lead a late lead slip away from them against the Gonzaga Bulldogs dropping both road games last week. So it looks like the Cardinal is definitely NIT bound this year. That’s probably for the better anyway, since I’ve got a 3 month old boy at home now, I won’t have much time to sit and watch all those tourney games anyway.

The NIT isn’t on TV right?

Magical words to my ear.

Los Angeles Dodgers Pitchers and Catchers report. We can start leaving the doldrums of the basketball season behind and look forward to what should be an interesting baseball season. The Dodgers, along with the rest of MLB teams, open up spring camps today. Ah to be able to drive to a park and start throwing, catching, and hitting a baseball and then refer to it as “work.” May the guys lucky enough to play baseball professionally realize what a treat it is for them to do what they do (oh yeah, Barry Bonds sucks).

All that left now is the countdown towards the first games:

  • Spring training: March 2, vs. Atlanta, 10 a.m. PST, at Holman Stadium, Vero Beach, Fla.
  • Regular season: April 3, vs. Atlanta at Dodger Stadium, 1 p.m.

Good-bye, Arrested Development?

Fox airs a 2 hour block of Arrested Development tonight opposite the Winter Olympics opening ceremonies. From my first viewing of the series Pilot episode, I couldn’t stop laughing. I would watch episodes over and over (thanks to TiVo) and every viewing enticed laughter. It’s not like the laugher is provoked by knowing the jokes ahead of time, the laughter is from noticing something I missed during the previous viewings. There are very few shows that can make one laugh after multiple airings of an episode, it’s ashame to have one go by the wayside. There have been rumors that Showtime may pick up the series, but I seriously believe tonight will be the last time I ever see a new episode of Arrested.

Fox must really want the show to bomb to place it’s loast 2 airings against some of the most anticipated Sporting events of this very young year (Orange Bowl in January and Winter Olympics in February).

Stanford drops a critical one.

Stanford-Cal Basketball The Cardinal came up just short tonight when trying to beat Cal @ Haas, 65-62. They had a shot, but Cal (they do have smart kids there you know) triple teamed Hernandez at the end and made him cough up the ball. Mad props to Haryasz who played with a nasty shiner and some special goggles. I thought they went away from him unnecessarily as he seemed to get to the foul line at will, but since they had a shot to tie at the end of regulation, can’t really complain too much.

Still, no impressive road victories to show. It looks like only a Pac-10 tourney triumph will keep this group out of the NIT this year.

Peace Out.

Dodger Stadium facelift

Spring training must be close because I’m suddenly itching for news about the Dodgers. After browsing the Dodgers website, I found a collage of all the seats being torn out for the upcoming season.PS. Here’s a link for all the Giants fans out there. Dodgers

Fernandomania continues!!!

Fernando Valenzuela Sort of. He’s now 45 and pitches in the Mexican league for a border town team Mexicali. From the L.A. Times:

Fernando Valenzuela, 45, had another solid season in the Mexican Winter League, posting a 4-2 record with a 4.21 earned-run average for Mexicali.

Not as dominant as the teenager that won over LA in the early 80’s, but it’s good for nostalgia’s sake, nonetheless.

So to every Mexican’s favorite pitcher of the 80’s I say, “Si se puede!”

Grey's Anatomy My wife and I got around to watching the Super Bowl edition of Grey’s Anatomy off of TiVo. My wife kept going off on how the episode was so suspenseful, while the only thing I could think of was how that loser with the paramedic’s hand in his torso was an instantaneous Darwin Award winner. Lakers on lengthy slide.

Filed under: Lakers, Basketball, Sports — Javi @ 10:54 pm
As if losing to the Bobcats wasn’t low enough, the Lakers then proceed to lay an even bigger goose egg against the Hornets in a wire to wire 106-90 defeat. Teams finally figured out that if they double team Kobe *all* of the time, the rest of the Lakers can’t make enough points to keep the Lakers in the game for more then 4 minutes. The Lakers never lead against the Hornets and barely lead (if at all in the first quarter) against the lowly Bobcats.

Here’s to looking forward to spring training, ’cause NBA season is dead in LA for all non-Clippers fan.
